Marin Agricultural Land Trust

Marin Agricultural Land Trust (MALT) is a private, member-supported, nonprofit organization created in 1980 by a coalition of local ranchers and environmentalists to permanently preserve Marin County farmlands for agricultural use. MALT eliminates development potential on farmland through the acquisition of conservation easements in voluntary transactions with landowners. MALT also encourages public policies that support agriculture and promotes public awareness of its importance.

As the first land trust of its kind, MALT is a model for communities across the nation. Some of the Bay Area’s most highly acclaimed dairy products and organic crops are produced on farmland protected by MALT conservation easements, which now total more than 41,500 acres on 64 family farms and ranches, but 60,000 acres are still at risk.
