Sanctuary Forest is a land trust whose mission is to conserve the Mattole River watershed and surrounding areas for wildlife habitat and aesthetic, spiritual, and intrinsic values, in cooperation with our diverse community.
Sanctuary Forest developed in 1987 out of efforts to protect the remaining old growth redwood forests in the Mattole River headwaters of northwestern California. Whale Gulch resident Rondal Snodgrass was the founder of Sanctuary Forest along with Myriam Dardenne of the Redwoods Monastery. Sanctuary Forest continues to protect land through conservation easements and direct land acquisition. In 2005 we developed the Mattole Flow Program to address the critical issue of low summer stream flows in the Mattole River, threatening both salmon and human survival. Visit our website (www.sanctuaryforest.org) for related documents such as “Save Water, Save Salmon” and our brochures, “Legal Options for Streamflow Protection” and “Water Storage and Forbearance.”
How to Support
Help us help the river by donating to our organization, which you can do via our website or give us a call. Wherever you live, please consider a conservation easement if you are a landowner, and conserve water whenever possible to maintain or restore the health of your watershed.
