Sleep in a Caboose at the Featherbed Railroad Bed & Breakfast

Sleep in a Caboose at the Featherbed Railroad Bed & Breakfast

At the Featherbed Railroad, guests sleep in one of our nine luxuriously-furnished (recycled!) caboose suites.

We are located on the north shore of Clear Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake in California and possibly the oldest lake in North America, also known as the “Bass Capitol of the West.” The property boasts a large park-like guest area with bay, oak, and redwood trees hundreds of years in age.

The property was a resort owned by the Johnson family in the 1950s. There have been only two owners since that time. The Bassignani family built the Featherbed Railroad in the late 1980s; Tony and Peggy Barthel continue the tradition of friendly resort accommodations.
Bed and Breakfast Style

Guests can enjoy our large park-like lawn; lounge at the pool; gather for games, cards, and jigsaw puzzles in the dining and gathering room; enjoy the lake view from the front porch; relive childhood on the swing attached 50 feet up in one of the trees; and launch and moor their boats at our launch and dock.

The Main Station of the Featherbed Railroad is a 100-year-old home with a fireplace built of local volcanic rock. The cabooses were build between the 1930s and 1950s, and retired to the B&B in the late 1980s. Although some original caboose features are still present in the guest suites, modern amenities such as featherbeds and two-person Jacuzzi tubs make guests feel comfortable and relaxed in their suites.

Guests are encouraged to hang and re-use towels during their stay. Kitchen scraps are composted and used in the kitchen garden. Breakfast includes, as much as possible, fresh, locally-grown or locally-derived fruits, vegetables, nuts, and eggs. Menus are built around in-season fruits and vegetables.

Pet Friendly Notes
The innkeepers have two dogs whom they love very much and we understand the desire to travel with pets. Some of the caboose suites are dog-friendly.
