Walnut Agriculture

Lake County has always been a predominantly agricultural county, shifting from generalized farming to large Bartlett Pear orchards, Walnut orchards, and some livestock. Now, almost everything has been converted to the harvest of wine grapes, with just a few walnut and pear orchards left. Visitors can experience and learn about the process and influence of walnut agriculture at several locations throughout Lake County:

Barrett Farms-
Certified Organic by California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF), home of Walnut Central, By Cracky It’s Jackies Farm Fresh Eggs, and Clucky Plucky Poultry. Dancing Tree People-
Organic orchard and garden that embraces the ethics and principles of permaculture and organic growing. The 11-acre orchard is certified organic and has been producing walnuts for more than 50 years; organically since 2000. Organic vegetable and herb garden, greenhouse and organic starts, honey bees, solar energy, and permaculture design elements. Pygmy goats and chickens help with soil fertility, mowing, and weed control. Natural and green buildings are being constructed, including a straw and cob cottage. Leonardis Organics-
Certified organic (CCOF) 40-acre farm. The property boasts a 100-year old dairy barn and 60-year old walnut trees, in addition to the vegetables, flowers, and other produce such as figs and pomegranates. Top of Konocti Farms-
Guided hikes to top of 4,300-foot Mount Konocti on old road through walnut orchards past original homestead cabins built in 1903. On one of the peaks Native Americans dropped notched sticks into air vents that would later mysteriously appear in Clear Lake. Much of Mount Konocti is privately owned and maintained; your visit helps support efforts to keep it pristine and development-free. Bring you lunch; children welcome. Modest rates.
